This is a simple program for reading and making sense of the EDID™ that is found in DDC™ or Plug and Play compliant monitors. It provides detailed information about your monitor such as supported resolutions, model number, manufacturer, manufacture date, scanning frequencies, addressable pixels, maximum horizontal and vertical image size, energy saving capabilities, color and gamma characteristics, sync input, and white point.
Some of this information may be relevant for color calibration in programs such as Adobe Photoshop. It may also provide information regarding the display's capabilities and setup of interest to many other users.
Simple DDC requires the Griffin Technology Mac PnP adapter to be used with PC monitors. It is directly compatible with many Apple displays including AppleVision models and requires a PCI Mac and system 7.6.1 or greater. It is also compatible with iMacs and the new B&W G3 and does not require any video adapter when used with these models.
The EDID™ (Extended Display Indentification Data) standard defines data formats for the transmission of configuration information. The DDC™ (Display Data Channel) standard defines a communications channel between a computer display and a host. This channel may be used to send configuration information and display control information in addition to being used as a data channel for Access.bus peripherals.
Operation
To use Simple DDC simply double click on the application. You will be presented with a list of detailed information about your computer's monitor. If the application reports an error, it may because you have an older System version or a monitor that does not support DDC or Plug and Play communications.
If you have a PCI Mac and a Plug and Play compatible PC display and are still getting an error, you would need a Griffin Technology Mac PnP adapter. The adapter allows the computer to communicate with compatible displays. This not only allows Simple DDC and other applications like it to function, it also allows the Mac OS to enable a custom list of resolutions that exactly match your displays capabilities - Plug and Play.
System Requirements
In order to use Simple DDC 1.2 you need a DDC compliant monitor and a PCI PowerMac or clone running system 7.6.1 or higher.
*PC monitors require the Mac 'PnP' Adapter from Griffin Technology, set to Plug and Play.
